আজ যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের মহাকাশ গবেষণা প্রতিষ্ঠান নাসার গবেষকেরা একটি সুসংবাদ দিতে পারেন। আমাদের এই মিল্কিওয়ে ছায়াপথের কোনায় পৃথিবী সদৃশ আরেকটি গ্রহের আবিষ্কারের ঘোষণা দিতে পারেন তাঁরা।
আজ বৃহস্পতিবার নতুন আবিষ্কার সম্পর্কে জানানোর জন্য একটি সংবাদ সম্মেলন ডেকেছে নাসা। মিল্কিওয়ে গ্যালাক্সি পর্যবেক্ষণকারী কেপলার নভোযান থেকে প্রাপ্ত তথ্য জানাবেন তাঁরা।
২০০৯ সালের মে মাস থেকে আমাদের সৌরজগতের বাইরে নতুন গ্রহের সন্ধানের জন্য কাজ করে যাচ্ছে কেপলার মিশন। এখন পর্যন্ত ‘গোল্ডিলক জোন’ এলাকায় পৃথিবী সদৃশ চার হাজার গ্রহের খোঁজ দিয়েছে বিশেষভাবে তৈরি এই কেপলার স্পেস অবজারভেটরি। গোল্ডিলক জোন হচ্ছে মিল্কিওয়ে ছায়াপথের নাতিশীতোষ্ণ অঞ্চল যেখানে বসবাসের উপযোগী গ্রহ থাকতে পারে বলে গবেষকেরা ধারণা করেন।
গবেষকেরা এবারে পৃথিবীর সঙ্গে অনেক বেশি মিল রয়েছে এমন একটি গ্রহ আবিষ্কারের ঘোষণা দিতে পারেন। আমাদের সূর্যের মতো কোনো নক্ষত্রকে কেন্দ্র করে ঘুরছে এ রকম একটি বা যমজ গ্রহের কথাও জানাতে পারেন তাঁরা। আমাদের সৌরজগতের বাইরে এলিয়েন বা ভিনগ্রহবাসীর সভ্যতা গড়ে উঠেছে সেই ধারণার ওপর নতুন করে আশা জাগাবে এই আবিষ্কার।

চলতি সপ্তাহে বিখ্যাত ব্রিটিশ পদার্থবিজ্ঞানী স্টিফেন হকিং ও জ্যোতির্বিদ রয়্যাল লর্ড মার্টিন রিজ সৌরজগতের বাইরে মিল্কিওয়ে ছায়াপথে এলিয়েন বা বুদ্ধিমান ভিনগ্রহের প্রাণী খোঁজার জন্য ১০ কোটি মার্কিন ডলারের উদ্যোগ নেওয়ার ঘোষণা দিয়েছেন।
মহাকাশে পৃথিবী–সদৃশ অনেক গ্রহই রয়েছে সে বিষয়ে এখন গবেষকেরা এক রকম নিশ্চিত হয়েছেন। তবে তাঁদের বক্তব্য— এসব গ্রহের কোনটি গ্যাসীয় আবার কোনোটি পাথুরে। যে সব নক্ষত্রকে কেন্দ্র করে এই গ্রহগুলো ঘোরে, নক্ষত্র থেকে খুব কাছে থাকার কারণেই এখানে প্রাণ ধারণের উপযোগী পরিবেশ থাকে না।
গবেষকেরা মনে করেন, পৃথিবীতে যেহেতু প্রাণ উদ্ভবের জন্য তরল পানি অত্যাবশ্যকীয় তাই যেসব গ্রহে তরল পানির অস্তিত্ব আছে সেখানে এলিয়েন থাকতে পারে। (স্পেসডটকম, টেলিগ্রাফ)
